Tea and the Evening Routine: Building a Screen-Off Pause

The useful part of an evening tea may be the ten minutes around it: the kettle going on, the laptop closing and the phone staying on the other side of the room. The cup is a cue, not a treatment for a sleep disorder.

Give the day a visible ending

Clear one small space on the counter. Put the mug there each evening. While the tea steeps, close the last work tab and plug the phone in somewhere you cannot reach from bed. None of this needs to be photogenic; it only needs to be repeatable.

Pick a flavor you would drink without the label

Chamomile is not useful to someone who dislikes its apple-like floral taste. Rose can be lovely in a restrained blend and overwhelming in a heavy one. Buy for flavor first. A calming name cannot rescue a cup you avoid making.

Keep the ritual short enough to survive a busy week

An hour-long routine is easy on Sunday and difficult on Wednesday. Ten quiet minutes is more realistic. The aim is to create a clean transition, not another task to complete perfectly.

Know when the cup is beside the point

Persistent difficulty sleeping, severe anxiety, breathing problems, pain or other concerning symptoms need appropriate professional attention. A warm drink can accompany care, but it should not delay it.
