What a Tongue Comparison Can—and Cannot—Tell You
A tongue comparison can encourage careful observation, but it cannot diagnose chronic disease. Light, phone processing, food, coffee, brushing, hydration and natural variation all change what a user sees.
Start with the camera problem
Phone cameras alter white balance and saturation. Bathroom bulbs can add yellow or blue casts. Even a technically sharp image may not represent the color a trained observer would see in person.
Illustrations are even broader
Qi & Leaf uses illustrations rather than photo analysis. They are intentionally approximate and optional. “Not sure” is a valid answer, and the result should never depend on a user forcing a match.
Some choices should stop the quiz
A very dark or unusual appearance combined with new, persistent or concerning symptoms should not produce a shopping recommendation. The proper result is a safety message and appropriate professional care.
Keep the result modest
A safe result can say “you preferred a warm caffeine-free category.” It should not say a tongue image proves heat, blood stasis, organ weakness or a chronic condition.
Frequently asked questions
Can a tongue photo diagnose diabetes?
No. Diabetes diagnosis requires validated medical testing.
Why keep tongue illustrations at all?
They provide cultural context and a reflective prompt, provided their limits are explicit.
